From the basic definitions of business, a good CSR initiative is one that aligns itself to the company’s goals and objectives. This implies that for effectiveness and relevance, the proposal to be implemented must be some way beneficial to the company, not necessarily financially but in terms of marketing, public relations or positively affecting consumer perspectives. Considering this, Baking Company Inc requires to opt for a program that is aligned with its business goals and objectives.

As a business, a fundamental objective is to maximize profits. Considering the first proposal that seeks to sponsor a Walk Away Hunger fundraising event, the company will benefit from the branding and advertisement. This is aligned to its fundamental objective as it will increase mass awareness and thus market penetration while implying to the public that the company actually cares about more than just making profits (Garvy & Newell, 2005).

Proposal 2 on the other hand requires making donations to organizations that give food to those who need it. While this is a great way of giving back to the society, it has no direct impact on the company’s performance. This option provides no publicity or branding benefits to the company.

Therefore, using an economist’s argument, and taking this on from an ethical business perspective, the first proposal would be more viable for the company. This does not mean that the second option is not good, only that it does not serve the business interests of the company in the long or short term. It is, therefore, not as beneficial as the first one, which will provide the company with both short and long term advantages (Hatcher, 2002).

In conclusion, when choosing a CSR initiative to embark on, a business needs to consider what it will gain from the venture. While CSR entails giving back to the society, it has to be in line with the fundamentals of the business through marketing, advertising and/or branding rights.
